About us

At Wombat Ware we are developing solutions for active iPad users who need added support to keep using their iPads.

One of the problems we are addressing is the thermal shutdown of iPads. While trying to solve the overheating problem, we considered the different use cases, including: General Aviation (Electronic Flight Bags), Drones, Sports Coaching, Field work, Emergency services, Videography/Media Production, etc. So we have designed our cooling case to be versatile.

How it started

The Cooling Case started out as a once-off custom prototype idea/solution for a sports scientist who had troubles with an overheating iPad. For those who are interested in that story, you will find it here: "Designing An iPad Cooling Case". That was 2012/13.

Many years on, it has become evident that the iPad's thermal shutdown problem has persisted. It continues to affect a lot more people beyond sports coaching. The main group of people that reached out to me were pilots in general aviation.

So in 2021, we launched the cooling case for the iPad mini 5. Then, making the iPad mini 4 version the following year, and the iPad mini 6 version in 2023/24. One of the key design features is the swappable cover/sleeve. So when you upgrade your iPad mini, you could still reuse the main cooling body and just get the cover for the next model.  Read more about it here: link.

Thankfully, the iPad mini 7 (or A17 Pro) has the same dimensions as the mini 6, so we didn't need to make another cover.

How we make the cases

If you haven't seen the cooling cases in person, they're 3D-printed. The factory that makes our cases uses an industrial printer that fuses plastic (Nylon PA11/12) powder together. The Nylon PA11/12 offers a good balance of flexibility and strength, allowing the iPad mini to snap into the case. It's also really lightweight, which is what lots of people like about it (based on feedback/reviews).

Having a swappable cover design and using 3D printing (in our view) helps avoid overproducing parts that could end up in the landfill.

How it's going - cases for bigger iPads

After 2023, we have had increasing requests for cooling cases for the 10", 11" and sometimes 13" iPads. We started working on it at the start of 2024, and it has taken way longer than we expected. We recruited some Beta testers from the end of 2024 and into 2025, and have done a few iterations (versions) as we gathered feedback. A few of them have kindly shared photos.

The design is quite different from the iPad mini case: the iPad doesn't 'snap' into the case but is 'slotted' in. However, there is still the concept of swappable sleeves (i.e., a main/central cooling body that attaches to different covers that fit different iPad models). Similarly, users who decide to upgrade to a newer iPad model could keep their cooling body and get a new cover. Hopefully, more will be revealed soon (later this year).

In the meantime, we are trying to get as much input as possible from users (that's you), so that we get it right. If you would like to have a say in your future cooling case, please send us a message on our Contact Us page. Subscribe to our newsletter too, so you get the latest updates.
