Why the change?
It was with the best intentions that we designed the different iPad mini cooling cases. We gathered as much information as we could and made somewhat informed decisions on the design. As time goes on and the cooling cases get used, we gathered user feedback. We realised that some of the initial design choices were not the best. The advantage of using 3D printing as our production method is that we are not committed to a mould (or a design) that requires us to produce thousands of cooling cases. We do make tiny adjustments along the way, but this time, the updates are more significant.
What changed?
1/ Button tabs
We first released the iPad mini 5 cooling case in 2021. It was designed with button tabs. They were meant to allow users to push the volume buttons and on/off button easily. About six months later, we received requests for the iPad mini 4 case. We realised that the buttons were in slightly different positions, so we made a case/sleeve specific to the mini 4 button placements.

This (button tab concept) was carried forward to the iPad mini 6 cooling case design because we thought that if it works, we shouldn't change it.
The reality was, they kind of worked, but they were not perfect. So they are now gone, and in their place are open, wider cut-outs and access to the buttons.

2/ Corner bumps
The corner bumps had multiple functions. They were meant to provide protection to the iPad mini when the case is dropped. They were also useful as leverage to remove the iPad mini from the case. The openings in the bumps also allowed them to be connection points for lanyards. It was also a design feature that differentiates us from other cases.

But over time, we had more comments about the case feeling bigger than it should because of the bumps. So we reduced it, and the newer versions look smaller and are about 3-4 grams lighter.

3/ LEDs
This is a small adjustment, and it may or may not matter depending on the user. Instead of having the LEDs stick out, they are now more hidden. If the LEDs shining at night are a problem, it is now easier to cover them with electrical tape to block out the light.

Will there be more changes?
That's a really good question. There are still things we are working on, and we have a backlog of potential features that we want to add or change. They are not in any particular order, but here they are:
- A cover for the screen
- A kick stand
- An improved button
- A better way to control the fans
- An integrated mounting system
- Passive cooling
Do you think we are on the right track? If yes, what should we focus on more first? Or what do you see missing and should be included? Please let us know (contact us or leave a comment below)!
